Where to Take Visitors in Chicago

One of the greatest things about living in Chicago is that people love to visit you. You don’t always have to be the friend traveling around because you live in an awesome city – with a lot to offer visitors! Not to mention your PPM apartment is most likely an awesome place for a few friends to crash. Here are our favorite spots to take friends and family when they visit:

Architecture River Cruise

This is actually one of the few guided tours in the city that will impress even the most dedicated Chicago resident. You get a beautiful city view from the Chicago river and you learn more about Chicago’s history than you ever knew possible. Before your guests make a terrible mistake and get on a Segway or do a bike tour, impress them with a boat tour and they will be forever grateful. Check out: http://www.architecture.org/rivercruise

Catch a Cubs Game

Make a day of it – if you catch an afternoon Cubs game you can get bottomless mimosas and brunch before and probably show your guests one of the best days ever. Summer in Chicago? Yeah, pretty much the greatest place imaginable. If you really want to seem like you’re in the know, get tickets to a rooftop overlooking Wrigley where you can get an open bar and buffet while watching the game.

Go to the Turtle Races

Yes, you heard right. Turtle races. There is a dive bar in Lincoln Square where you can take your friends to see real live turtle races. It’s called Big Joe’s (1818 W. Foster Ave). So how does it work? Well, you need to collect tickets. You can do this by buying pitchers, pints and shots. Yes, you need to buy to participate in the turtle races. There will be six races with six competitors, and you’re only eligible if you hear your ticket number called. The races start at 9pm so go early and start drinking to collect tickets. You’ll get assigned one of the turtles (either Chucks, Lola, Doozy, Swisher, Jolanda or Lucky Dan (I’ve been told Jolanda is by far the slowest). The turtles start in the center and the first to crawl to the outside is the champion. Oh yeah, and in November there’s a tournament of turtle champions where the grand price racer gets a trip to Vegas. You’re friends are going to love this place (and you for taking them here)!

Go Shopping in Bucktown or Wicker Park instead of the MagMile

Sure, the mag mile is fun. But doesn’t every one of your friends have a forever 21, banana republic and levi’s in their town or state? How about taking your friends over to Wicker Park or Bucktown for some shopping instead? You can find some of the same stores that are on the Magnificent Mile but also some small unique boutiques or out of the way designers like Scotch & Soda, Habit, Michelle Tan, Free People, and Nanette Lepore. You get to skip the crowds of Michigan Ave. and also have two amazing neighborhoods full of a culture that is completely unique to Chicago. Stop at a bar or restaurant on your shopping trip. Mindy’s Hot Chocolate in Bucktown is one of my favorites.
