Who says vacations have to end with summer? Fall is a great time to treat yourself to a little rest and relaxation. Instead of dealing with the hassle (and cost) of an out-of-town trip, consider a staycation. Chicago is one of the greatest cities in the world, and you’re lucky enough to call it home—it’s time to take advantage of that. With so much to do in the Windy City, you can have a fun, memorable Chicago staycation while still enjoying the comfort of your own bed every night.
Just like any other vacation, the first step to a successful staycation is to formulate a plan. Here’s how to get started.
Set The Mood
One major benefit to a staycation is that you don’t have to book a place to sleep. However, you still deserve the pampering and luxurious treatment that a nice hotel would provide (it is a “vacation,” after all). Before starting your staycation, purchase some items you wouldn’t normally treat yourself to, like a fancy shower gel or face mask. If you don’t already own a robe, now’s a good time to get one. Aromatherapy candles are also a good idea. Or, if candles aren’t your thing, check out some of our favorite alternatives. Pick out some special things that will make your staycation feel luxurious. This will help set the tone for a weekend of total rest and relaxation.
Attempt to Unplug
It can be easy to slip back into the stresses of “normal” life while on a staycation since you’re technically still at home. Phone calls, texts, and email alerts will be tempting to check. For the ultimate chance at R&R, use your staycation as a chance to unplug. Step away from your computer and turn email alerts off your phone. If you really want a digital detox, turn everything off for the majority of your staycation. You may be surprised at how little you actually miss the constant interruption of smartphone distractions.
Dig In
Let’s be honest: vacations are all about the food, and Chicago has some of the best you can find. A staycation is an ideal time to finally try out some of the new restaurants or bars you’ve been meaning to get to. Check out Eater’s latest list of the “Hottest Restaurants in Chicago Right Now” for some foodie inspiration.
Be a Tourist
People tend to avoid touristy things in their own city. The truth is, though, some tourist attractions are worth visiting. Book a tour or two during your Chicago staycation to expand your knowledge of the city you call home. One of Chicago’s most famous features is the exquisite architecture found all around the city. Get the story behind your city with the Chicago Architecture Foundation Center, which offers a river cruise tour aboard Chicago’s “First Lady.” If you aren’t in the mood to spend money on a tour, there are plenty of free options as well, including walking tours of the city. Another cost-effective option is to plan your staycation around some of the museum’s “Free Days.”
Get Crafty
Beyond the endless list of activities to do in Chicago, you can make the most out of your Chicago staycation without ever leaving your apartment. One particularly fun way to do this is with a craft or DIY project. If you want to feel somewhat productive during your staycation, head over to Pinterest and choose a DIY project for your apartment. Follow PPM Apartments for some crafty ideas. You’ll feel a lot more accomplished at the end of the weekend then you would after laying on a beach for three days.
