As a vibrant urban jumble, Chicago is bursting with things to do at any time of the year, and the summer ramps it up even more.
There are literally too many things to do in any given week to list here, let alone for the entire summer.
If you want a pretty complete rundown of all Chicago has to offer, you can check out Choose Chicago’s Event Calendar.
You’ll see literally hundreds of events that are going on at any given time.
Here are some of the big summer festivals to look forward to this summer:
Eat It Up or Burn It Off
Chicago offers you great opportunities to enjoy wonderful food, as well as opportunities to burn off as many calories as you can eat. Farmers’ markets offer you an excellent opportunity to eat locally-grown food as well as pick up handmade local crafts. And of course there’s Taste of Chicago, the country’s premier outdoor food festival, held in Grant Park July 9-13.
If you are looking for ways to burn off your winter fat, there are lots of opportunities. Summer workouts run June 7 to August 30 in Millennium Park, every Saturday morning. Also, all 28 PPM’s buildings are just block away from running and bike paths. If you’d rather dance your way to fitness, check out Chicago SummerDance, every Thursday through Sunday in Grant Park from June 27 to September 14.
Flicks and Tunes
If you’re looking to just chill and enjoy some art, you can check out movies and music in the parks. The Summer Film Series runs from June 24 to August 29, showing a movie every Tuesday night in Millennium Park.
Your music options are numerous, offering something for every taste. The Millennium Park Music Series kicks off on May 29, with free concerts on Mondays and Thursdays. The Chicago Blues Festival chills in Grant Park on June 13-15. The Chicago Gospel Music Festival takes over multiple locations across Chicago on June 27 to 29. The Chicago Jazz Festival takes over the Cultural Center, Millennium Park, and Grant Park August 28 to 31.
And don’t forget to check out a smaller neighborhood festival that offers great times just around the corner!
Great for Kids
The summer season kicks off with Chicago Kids and Kites Festival, held at Montrose Harbor in Lincoln Park on May 3. Free paper kites and family-focused activities make this a great stop for anyone. You can also purchase more elaborate kites onsite, get tips on kite flying, and see professional kite demonstrations. The Big Kite Candy Drop is super-popular with kids as it flies overhead, dropping candy from the sky! Not to be missed.
And if you’re looking for a higher-octane flight spectacular, look for the Chicago Air and Water Show on August 16 and 17, featuring the Blue Angels, parachutists, and virtually any kind of flying craft you can imagine.
Who doesn’t love a parade? And kids love them even more. The Memorial Day Parade is one of the biggest downtown parades, and will be held on May 24.
