So this winter was brutal, I think we can all agree. Not only did the polar vortex cause me to use a few more sick days than usual, but it also caused me to eat a few more packages of Oreos than usual.
Comfort food, am I right? But now that bikini season is right around the corner I’m kind of regretting the extra “layers” I put on in the winter – I figured I can’t be the only one in this boat so I’ve put together some summer sports leagues around the city that will get us all not only enjoying the beautiful weather that is sure to be here any moment….anyyyyy moment now… but it will also help getting us all feeling good, healthy, and ready for the beach.
Chicago Metropolitan Sports Association
Maybe the best sports league association Chicago has to offer because it is the largest not-for-profit gay and lesbian sports organization in the Midwest (yay Chicago!!). The league is open to all those who want to play (who are over 18) regardless of sexual orientation, gender, or gender identity. Sports include: badminton, bowling, flag football, golf, kickball, soccer, softball, ultimate Frisbee and volleyball. http://chicagomsa.leagueapps.com
Chicago Sport and Social Club
A ton of great leagues to choose from and it’s a well-established and well-organized club. They not only set times, reserve courts and hire refs, but they also supply t-shirts. Of course there is a fee for every team, but there are also discounts at bars around the city for being on a league and you have a guaranteed weekly workout – kinda hard to pass up. And the locations are everywhere – most leagues are walkable from all PPM buildings. For instance, beach volleyball teams have locations at Montrose, North Ave and Oak Street. You have no excuse not to sign up. The list is endless for the sports they offer and includes: beach volleyball, beach tennis, kickball, basketball, soccer, baseball, softball, golf, football and dodge ball. Head over to their website for pricing, locations and times: http://www.chicagosocial.com
Ultimate Frisbee is one of the fastest growing sports in the United States and attracts people of all athletic ability. Chicago has over 2,000 players in the Ultimate community. Summer leagues meet in fields and parks or even at the beach – and don’t worry about being competitive. There are spots for beginners, co-ed, mens and women’s. http://www.ultimatechicago.org
Players Sport and Social Group
Not only offers all the amenities of the Chicago Sport and Social Club – but also has a strong social aspect. Social events are highly publicized and happen all the time. If you’re looking to not only get out and get active this summer but also meet new people, this might be the league for you. Sports offered include: volleyball, dodge ball, flag football, basketball, soccer, softball, kickball, bowling, and even cornhole (bags). https://www.playerssports.net
