Ringing in the New Year in Chicago

Don here, PPM’s go-to guy for hip happenings in Chicago.  As I’m sure you’re aware, New Years Eve is coming up.  And since it’s the unequivocal biggest party night of the year, it can be stressful trying to figure out where to go and what to do.  Luckily I have a few tips/ideas on how to ring in the New Year perfectly.

How to Catch A Cab

Don’t try.  With the sheer volume of people out on New Years cabs are in short supply.   I should know.  I’ve pressed my luck more than once and been left out in the cold (pun intended).   Plan your night close to a CTA route, which, if you’re living in a Planned Property building is easy; our buildings are conveniently located near public transportation in the hottest Chicago neighborhoods.   And bonus – the CTA is offering rides for one penny all NYEvening long.

If You’re Single

That’s a good thing.  Being single shouldn’t be a deterrent to going out for the big night.  Many of the people out on NYE are single, and since everyone is in a jovial mood, it’s the perfect time to walk up and make new friends.  Also, many of the big parties serve passed hors d’oeuvres, so even if you run out of things to talk about, you can still talk about the food.

Where To Go?  What to Do?

A lot of people have been asking me what my personal plans are for the night.  I decided to do it up big with the Starry New Years Eve Party in the ballroom at the Hard Rock Hotel.  I like indulging on New Years, and this party has what I’m looking for – an open bar, passed hors d’oeuvres, and (here’s the selling point for me) a great lineup of music including a special performance from American Idol winner Lee DeWyze.  And since the Michigan Ave. bus is running all night long, I won’t have any worries on how to get home to my PPM apartment in Lakeview.

  1. Have fun at the Hard Rock & stay safe everyone.

    Cheers!

  2. as long as I am w my friends I don’t care where we go, the smartest thing it is to stay in an area w many bars nxt to it, so if u get bored in one u can just walk to thr next!
happy new years in advance to everyone!
GREAT TIP ABOUT THE CTA GIVIN RIDES AFTER 10 for a penny wow 🙂

  3. Don, great little article here. I would suggest adding the AAA “tipsy tow” info in there. I dont know where there boundaries are listed in regards to where they will drive you. But its an 800 number that you call and it takes your drunk self and your car home for FREE. and you DO NOT need to be a member!? winning! Here is the info I found….
“Don’t drink and drive-and don’t ride with anybody who does.Tipsy Tow offered by AAA: You don’t have to be a AAA member, from 6pm-6am on New Year’s Eve/Day they will take your drunk self and your car home for FREE. Save this number… 1-800-222-4357 . Please re-post this if you don’t mind to help save lives. Nationwide!”

  4. Good tips. The past 2 years, I waited for a cab and ended up walking into the nearest late-night bar to get out of the cold. Which meant I drank more than I wanted to instead of heading home. Last year I also witnessed 2 guys fighting over a cab which resulted in one getting punched.
