In our never-ending quest to find the best burger in Chicago, our Neighborhood Restaurant Review team headed to one of the latest players on the scene: Kuma’s Too, located on the border of Lakeview and Lincoln Park. Although Kuma’s Too has only been open for a few days, any resident food expert would tell you of the folklore of Kuma’s burgers from its original location in Avondale. This new location at 666 W. Diversey Ave. will save you the trip to the city’s northwest side and is sure to become a neighborhood staple in no time.
Kuma’s Corner has been serving up death metal-themed burgers and whiskey on tap since 2005. Burger enthusiasts have been lining up for Kuma’s Corner for years and their burgers are quite legendary. Take their “Kuma’s Classic” for example, a 10 oz. beef patty served up on a pretzel bun topped with bacon, cheddar, and a fried egg.
Although we’ve heard rave reviews about their other menu options including pulled pork and create-your-own mac and cheese, our team decided to try out what Kuma’s is known for: their burgers.
We headed to Kuma’s Too on opening day late in the afternoon and pulled up a seat at the bar. They have an awesome selection of craft beers and, of course, whiskey on tap. The walls are painted bright orange and heavy metal concert posters adorn the walls — quite a different vibe than the space’s previous occupants, The Counter. Kuma’s Too definitely feels like a more upscale version of Kuma’s Corner, but not to worry… there is still heavy metal music blasting loudly and giving the restaurant the right feel for the rocking burgers our team was about to enjoy.
Tim opted for the Metallica — a burger topped with buffalo sauce, bacon, and bleu cheese dressing. Loving all things buffalo and bleu, adding bacon to this masterpiece set him over the edge. The burger was perfectly medium and well-seasoned, the bacon cooked to perfection, and the cool bleu cheese and tangy buffalo sauce along with the soft and delicious pretzel bun made this a winner in his book.
Jasko ordered the Mastodon — a towering combination of BBQ sauce, cheddar, bacon, and frizzled onions. He decided to balance things out with his burger by ordering it with a side salad instead of fries, but after tackling the burger didn’t have enough room for the salad and ended up taking it to go.
Silviu ordered the Led Zeppelin — Led Zeppelin, a burger topped with pulled pork, bacon, cheddar, and pickles [which he ordered on the side]. Based on how incredible the pulled pork was, he’s going to try out the pulled pork sandwich next time he’s there!
The vibe, attitude, and personality of Kuma’s Too is in-your-face like their burgers and will keep us and many new Lincoln Park and Lakeview residents coming back for more.
On our way out our team noticed their “Rules” posted by the door. They pretty much sum up our experience and the vibe of all things Kuma…
Join us in welcoming Kuma’s Too to the neighborhood and definitely add it to your “must check out ASAP” list.
