Sometimes us Chicagoan’s write off our great restaurant institutions as either too touristy or too expensive. With that in mind, we stopped by Ditka’s in the Gold Coast for lunch recently and found it to be affordable, casual and most importantly DELICIOUS! We were greeted and seated immediately by a very enthusiastic hostess – we chose the bar! I mean why not right?
The bar is laid back, super comfortable and jammed with awesome sports memorabilia – it was perfect for a quick work day lunch! Our friendly server was right with us with cold water and a detailed explanation of the day’s specials – he was great! Here is what we had:
We had two, The Fridge (cheddar, mustard, mayonnaise & all the trimmings) and the Steakhouse (steak sauce, bacon, sauteed mushrooms & all the trimmings). Both featured perfectly cooked massive patties that were super juicy and flavorful. All pickles, onions, lettuce and tomatoes were cold, ripe and crunchy. The buns were probably the best we ever had! Huge well season fries were the perfect accompaniment to the excellent burgers!
Mike’s Chicken Salad
Grilled chicken breast, mixed greens, pecans, apples, cranberries, goat cheese – all in a balsamic vinaigrette – PERFECTLY EXECUTED! We left as full as those who had the burgers!
Fresh Fish Tacos
Succulent mahi mahi served with black beans, rice, pico de gallo, chipotle sauce – SCRUMPTIOUS WITH A KICK!
So don’t wait for out-of-towners or a special occasion – go to Ditka’s today for a great affordable lunch and soak up some great Chicago History! Make sure to also check out our review on Blue Door Kitchen & Garden!
