Microwaves are like lifesavers on busy nights when you don’t want to cook. But microwaves are actually good for more than just heating Chinese leftovers and frozen pizza. Microwaves offer some valuable, hidden benefits that may surprise you. Here are just a few of the best microwave hacks that will make your life a little easier. Because you can never know too many life hacks.
Froth Your Milk
You don’t need a fancy cappuccino machine to enjoy some froth. Just fill a mason jar up up half way with milk, screw the top on, and shake it well for one minute. This will create the foam. Next, remove the metal top and stick it in the microwave on high for about 30 seconds. Then add the froth to your cup of coffee (or anything else that needs some foam action).
Make Crunchy Bacon
Not a fan of rubbery bacon? Your microwave will make it nice and crispy. Here’s what to do: Line a plate with paper towels, then place your bacon strips on top. Cover the bacon with another paper towel and stick the plate in the microwave for about a minute per piece. Check on them, and cook the slices a bit longer if their texture isn’t crisp enough.
Revive Stale Bread
If you didn’t finish your bread quick enough, this microwave hack might bring it back to life. Place your stale bread in the microwave for ten seconds. Voila! Your bread will be moist and edible once again.
Get More Juice From Citrus
Give your lemons and limes an extra juice-boost with a little warm up. Place citrus in the microwave and zap them for 1-20 seconds. Then, squeeze! You’ll get a lot more juice out of your citrus by briefly warming it first.
Ripen a Banana
You don’t have to wait days for that banana to ripen. Instead, poke some holes in the peel with a fork, then place it on a plate. Stick it in the microwave for 30 seconds, and you’ll have a ripe banana. This is one of our favorite microwave hacks!
“Bake” a Potato
When you’re in a time crunch, you can use your microwave to make “baked” potatoes. Here’s how: Start by scrubbing the potato skin and pricking it with a fork a few times. Next, place it on a plate and put it in the microwave for five minutes. Once it’s done, turn it over and microwave it on the other side for another five minutes. That’s it!
