Meatless Monday

You may have heard the phrase “meatless Monday” where people avoid eating meat on Mondays. Why Monday? Because studies show that people are more likely to change a habit or do something new on a Monday (quit smoking, begin a diet, start exercising). So, what’s the point? Well, studies show that going meatless, even just once a week, can reduce your risk of chronic conditions like cancer, obesity, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease.
Not only is it a health benefit, but meat also requires a lot more energy to process and make so by going meatless once a week you’re also using less fossil fuel, water, and other resources. Americans eat a staggering 270 pounds of meat per person per year, this is more than almost any other country and we have obesity rates higher than almost any other country. Still not convinced? • Add years to your life. Eating red meat has been shown to correlate with fatal diseases like heart disease and cancer.

• Reduce your risk of diabetes. Studies show that consumption or red or processed meat greatly increases your risk of Type 2 Diabetes.

• Lose Weight. People who don’t eat meat or on low-meat diets have significantly lower weights on average.

• Schools are even doing it. Already more than 100 schools in the U.S. participate in Meatless Monday. In addition, 29 countries recognize the initiative.

• Meatless Monday may be spreading to restaurants. There are even some restaurants offering meatless Monday options. Though they are not taking meat off their menus for Mondays, they are helping to promote the initiative.

• Chicago Restaurants that support meatless Monday: Andie’s Restaurant, Duke’s Alehouse and Kitchen (crystal lake), Mercat a la Planxa, Trenchermen. This is merely the list of restaurants formally recognizing the “meatless Monday” movement. Countless restaurants in the Chicago area offer vegetarian options every day of the week!
