Keeping Healthy and Fit During the Holidays

With the holidays fast approaching, we are all going to find ourselves at holiday parties tempted with food, drinks, and desserts. Pumpkin Pie, stuffing, literally anything with chocolate…I could eat myself sick. This is most definitely the time of year to enjoy indulging a bit, but staying active will help keep those extra pounds off. Signing up for a local race can be a great step in that direction to not only get you out to race, but to keep you motivated.
Lucky for us the North side of Chicago offers plenty of options to race this time of year! Here are a few of my favorite options…all local, steps away from home, and all festive!
First up…the Life Time Turkey Day 5k which is held on Thanksgiving Day, November 28th. The course takes place in Lincoln Park and includes a part of the Lake Front Path. It is a great event held by Fleet Feet Sports and is in it’s 36th year which is also the longest running Turkey Trot in Chicago! This event supports the Greater Chicago Food Depository ensuring no Chicagoan goes hungry this Thanksgiving. I am absolutely going to run this 5k before my big Thanksgiving dinner. Moving into December…check out the Rudolph Ramble 8k and Donner Dash. This event is also held in Lincoln Park (bonus!) on Sunday, December 15th. What I love about this event is that it includes options for adults and children. The 8k starts at 9am and following that at 10am there are different distance options for children ages 2-12. Proceeds from the event support the Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago. Last year’s event raised over $2,000 for the charity plus an equal amount of toys. Consider taking part in this event to make this year an even more successful event for the Children’s Hospital. Find out more details via the link below…

Last but not least…I can’t think of a better way to start out the New Year. The 29th annual New Year’s Day 5k will be held on January 1st in yet again, Lincoln Park! Another great part about this race, it starts at 11am, so you can still enjoy your New Year’s Eve party but still feel alright to start out 2014 with a local 5k. A portion of run/walk proceeds will benefit the Lake View Citizens’ Council, a non-profit neighborhood organization. Check out the link for details…

As you can see, there are some great options to keep motivated and healthy during the upcoming holiday season. These events are right in our neighborhood and cover some really beautiful areas of Chicago. Not only are you doing something great for yourself, but each event supports fantastic local charities that are in even more of a need during the holidays. Get ready to lace up and hope to see you out there!
