Remote work is becoming increasingly common. According to FlexJobs, remote job holders account for 2.9% of the American workforce. This statistic is not surprising if you consider the many benefits of flexible employment. However, working remotely does come with challenges, including a constant battle against distractions. Work-from-home veterans insist that keeping their work and play separate from each other is essential to success. Setting up a designated work-from-home space in your apartment can help ensure that your workdays are productive, even if you don’t change out of your pajamas. Follow our tips for doing it right.
Set Up Near a Window
Proper lighting is imperative to any working environment. Set yourself up for success by choosing a spot in your apartment that gets plenty of natural light, preferably near a window. Research has shown that proper lighting can directly influence your productivity levels. This is one you don’t want to mess around with. Investing in a good lamp can also be a lifesaver if you plan on working nights.
Consider Ergodynamics
Comfort is conducive to productivity, so it’s important that your workspace is accommodating to your personal needs. Purchase an office chair (you can find affordable options at Target) that provides good back support (adjustable options are best). When typing on your computer, your elbows should be bent at about 45 degrees. Consider a standing desk so you can decrease the amount of time you spend sitting. You won’t be able to focus if you’re constantly distracted by discomfort, so investing in the right furniture will definitely pay off.
Stay Organized
Clutter can be a big distraction. For optimal at-home working conditions, keep your workspace clean and organized. At the end of each day, go through your things and get rid of anything that isn’t necessary. Clutter piles up fast, so the best thing you can do is to continuously clean out your work-from-home space.
Make sure that you have fun with it! The best part of working from home is that you get to decorate your office just the way you like it!
Good luck!
