Moving isn’t easy. There are a lot of moving parts, and costs add up quickly, especially if you need to hire some extra help. While there’s no free way to move to a new apartment, there is a way to do so without going broke. Here are our tips for how to save the most money on your next move.
Get Free Boxes
Moving isn’t free, but your moving boxes can be. Check out some local retail stores to see if you can take any boxes off their hands. They may be glad to see them go. Liquor stores are known for giving away cardboard boxes that are the perfect size for moving, so don’t forget to stop in there, too.
Utilize Packing Gear
But before you scour local stores for cardboard boxes, consider the moving gear you already have at home. Things like bags, suitcases, or bins can be used to pack up your apartment just as effectively, if not more so, than standard boxes. See what you have before you go out looking for more help.
Move on a Weekday
People tend to move on the weekends, and prices show it. To save some money on your move, opt to do it on a weekday instead. You may be able to get a better deal on moving equipment or help. Plus, you won’t have to deal with others moving into your building at the same time, which can make things a little less stressful.
Try Trash Bags
If you’re moving some fine pieces of clothing you own, you may be tempted to invest in a wardrobe box for protection. They can be pretty pricey, though. If you’d rather save some money, try opting for a trash bag instead. You can use a trash bag as a makeshift garment bag to protect fine clothing from outside elements. Try to use clear ones so you can easily see what clothes you have underneath.
