How to Give Yourself a Pedicure at Home

Step 1: Collect Your Tools

The first step to giving yourself an at-home pedicure is to gather your tools. You’ll need nail clippers, a nail file, a pumice stone or something else to scrub your feet, a clean towel or two, cuticle oil, lotion, a base coat polish, nail polish and a top-cost polish. You also may want a buffer for your toes, but that’s optional.

Step 2: Soak Your Feet

Once you have your supplies in front of you, it’s time to soak your feet. This is am an important step in the process because it’ll soften the skin of your feet along with your toes, making clipping and scrubbing easier. Fill your tub up with some warm, sudsy water and soak your feet for about ten minutes for best results. Be careful not to soak your toes for too long, or you’ll risk causing damage in the next step.

Step 3: Scrub!

Now it’s time to scrub. Using your pumice stone or another scrubbing tool, scrub the bottoms of your feet to remove dead skin. Be sure to focus on your heels along with the balls of your feet, because it’s common for stubborn callouses to form in those areas.

Step 4:  Clip, File and Shape Your Nails

Next, clip your toenails, and use a nail file them into your desired shape. Be careful not to cut your toes too short. It’s best to cut your nails in a straight line and then use your file to form your desired shape. If you have a buffer on hand, give your toenails a good buff, too.

Step 5: Moisturize

Once you’ve finished scrubbing, remove your feet from the water and pat them dry with a clean towel. Lather your feet with lotion to moisturize your skin, and massage cuticle oil into your cuticles to hydrate them. Pedicures are a form of self-care, so spend some time giving yourself a nice foot rub.

Step 6: Paint Your Toes

And now, the best part — it’s time to paint your toes. For best results, use a toe-separator, like this one here. Before you starting painting your toes, apply a thin base coat to your nails and let it dry. Next, using your desired color, begin with one stroke down the middle of the nail. Add a stoke on either side so that your nail is completely colored. You only need to apply three strokes of paint to each nail.

Step 7: Apply Your Top Coat

The final step in the process is to apply your topcoat polish. You can rely on the same three-step process you used to paint your toes to apply a topcoat. Let it dry, and you’re done!
