Every December, the Windy City bustles with holiday gatherings we look forward to year-round, from everyone’s favorite Christmas market to traditional holiday shows. This month, there’s tons of exciting stuff happening all around the city, so you’ll want to plan ahead of time. Below are the holiday events in Chicago that you should count on visiting this season.

Christkindlmarket

First on our list is the annual holiday Christkindlmarket, which is one of the city’s favorite past times. Each year, the area hosts some of the city’s best food and drink vendors for a celebration of festive proportions. Stroll through Daley Park to take in the sights of ornaments and handcrafted holiday goods along with the flavors of delicious bites and seasonal drinks.

Ice Skating In Millennium Park

Ice skating in Millennium Park is a must-do holiday activity this time of year. Slip on some ice skates and slide your way around the rink below Cloud Gate. The best part? If you bring your own skates, it’s totally free.

Winter Wonder Fest at Navy Pier

Next on our list of holiday events in Chicago is Winter Wonder Fest at Navy Pier. It features a huge indoor amusement park. It boasts holiday activities, amusement rides, games and more. The park also features over 500 beautifully decorated Christmas trees for your enjoyment. Oh, and there’s an ice skating rink there, too.

The Nutcracker by Joffrey Ballet

From now until December 29, you can catch Joffrey Ballet’s production of the classic Christmas story, “The Nutcracker”. This production features a reimagined version of the traditional tale. Follow along with Marie as she enters a magical, whimsical world filled with holiday fun and adventure.

A Christmas Carol at The Goodman Theatre

Nothing says “Christmas” quite like the beloved Dickens tale of “A Christmas Carol.” Head to the Goodman Theatre now through December 29 to catch a live production of this play. Join Ebeneezer Scrooge on his journey to redemption as he is visited by the ghosts of Christmas past, present and future. 

Lights at Morton Arboretum

Next, walk along the one-mile path and take in the stunning light installations at Illumination: Tree Lights at Morton Arboretum. This exhibition features a colorful, interactive holiday light experience. It’s an “unparalleled spectacle of color, light and sound,” according to the website. And, you’ll be able to roast marshmallows by the fire and sip on hot cocoa.

Lightscape at Chicago Botanical Garden

Last but not least is the Lightscape exhibit at Chicago Botanical Garden. This event features “an enchanting, after-dark, illuminated trail,” according to the website.
