Getting Started with Fitness in Lincoln Park

If you’re lucky enough to live in the Lincoln Park/Lakeview area of our fine city, you’ve probably noticed the above average fitness level of many of your neighbors.  You can hardly walk down Diversey without dodging a protruding yoga mat from a gym bag or being passed by a sweaty runner sporting a Chicago Marathon t-shirt.  Yes, we have some crazy fitness junkies here on the north side, but what if you’re just getting started? Do you feel intimidated by all the hard-core exercisers?  Are you just looking to tone up a little bit  or drop a few pounds for beach season?
Friends, I was in your non-athletic shoes just one year ago! I had a few too many slices of Sarpino’s at our Tony Awards party and noticed some trouble making it up to my fourth floor apartment via stairwell when the elevator was full.  I knew I needed to do something, but I wasn’t ready to consider myself one of those “gym people”.
Yoga is one of the best ways to get started with fitness.  It’s relaxing, energizing and depending on the type, you don’t even have to break a sweat.  Check out Infuse Yoga Spa at 713 W. Wrightwood for some very beginner-friendly yoga classes.  When you’re ready to step it up a bit, challenge yourself with Bikram Yoga (a 90 minute program done in a 105 degree room) at Bikram Yoga Chicago at 2736 N. Clark!
Don’t want exercise in public or commit to a gym membership? No problem! More and more people are getting fit right in their own homes with workout DVDs!  You’ve probably heard of P90X from the late-night info-mercials, but Beachbody offers a whole line of workouts for every level, every time constraint and every goal.  Check out all their available products on my site,
I promise you that even after making small changes in your daily routine, you can immediately feel more energized, more confident and happier.  Maybe by this time next year you can be running laps around North Pond or even writing your own fitness blog!
