Are you a weekend warrior? For those of us with nine to fives, the weekend is like a mini-holiday. When the clock hits 5’oclock on Friday, it’s time to celebrate. But how do you actually spend your weekends? If you’re like us, you’ve probably experienced the Sunday scaries after coming to the realization that you didn’t enjoy your weekend to the fullest. To help you from feeling this sense of dread, we’re sharing a nice big list of things you can do on your free time during the weekend. Here are some of our favorite fun things to do on the weekend to help get you inspired to make the most of your time off.
If you want to do something worthwhile during your free time, why not contribute to something bigger than yourself? There are endless ways to make a difference, whether you call Chicago home or live in another city. With so many volunteer opportunities available, it’s easy to find something that meshes well with your passions, skill and interests. Volunteer Match is a great resource for connecting with a cause that resonates with you.
Whether you’re a fiction fan or prefer sticking to educational non-fiction, getting lost in a book can be one of the most fun things to do on the weekend. And we all know reading has many benefits, so you can feel productive while you relax. We’re firm believes in treating yourself to a good book as often as possible, but we also know that it can be tough to find the time during the week. That’s why we recommend setting aside reading time on the weekends. (Psst: You can use the time to catch up on your blog reading, too).
Tourist In Your City
Everybody loves to hate on tourists. That means locals tend to miss out on a lot of the “touristy” stuff in their own city. But the truth is, some of the stereotypical tourist attractions can be worth checking out. If you’re looking for fun things to do on the weekend, consider being a tourist in your own city. Here in Chicago, you could spend the day at a museum, try an architecture tour or a river cruise or so much more. If you live elsewhere, check out some of the most popular attractions in your area, and plan a day to live like a tourist in your own town.
Staycation In Your Apartment
Speaking of being a tourist in your own city, a “staycation” is another way to give yourself that vacation experience without having to travel. In fact, you won’t even need to leave your apartment. If you ask us, all you really need for a successful staycation is to treat yourself to what you most enjoy right at home. Whether it’s reading, catching up on Netflix or treating yourself to some DIY skincare applications or face masks, choose some activities that bring you joy, and let yourself enter that “vacay mindset” from the comfort of your own home. Don’t forget to have some breakfast in bed.
Meal Prep For The Week
If you’re a fan of cooking, meal prepping for the week can be a lot of fun. Plus, it’ll help make the upcoming work week that much easier for you. Check out this roundup of meals to prep for the week here to get some recipe inspiration.
Another fun way to spend your time on the weekends is to bake something delicious. With more cold weather on the way, the baking season has only just begun. If you’re worried about overindulging on baked goods, don’t worry — you can bake healthier versions of your favorite treats. We’ve got good gluten recipes to share here, too.
Learn Something New
One of the most fun things to do on the weekend is to learn something new. Whether it’s a technical skill like coding or a leisurely activity like knitting, the weekend is an ideal time to pursue a new interest. Host A Game or Movie Night
Hosting a game night or a movie night in your apartment can be a ton of fun. Now that the weather’s getting colder, your friends will likely love the idea of hanging out together in your home instead of battling the elements while bar hopping. Check out these fun games you can play on a game night here. And while Halloween’s over, there’s no rule that says you can’t keep binge-watching horror movies. Invite some friends over, pop some popcorn and settle in for a spooky good time together.
Give Indoor Gardening A Go
Getting into indoor gardening can be another fun way to spend your free time. There are lots of benefits to housing plants in your home, from aesthetics to air-purifying properties. You can also try planting your own indoor herb garden. That way, you’ll have fresh herbs right on hand whenever you need them for a recipe.
Make A New Cocktail
The weekend is a great time to try your hand at cocktail making. Here are some healthier cocktail recipes that aren’t packed with sugar. If you’re having a game or movie night, you can make some of these cocktails for friends.
