Skincare indulgences are some of our favorite forms of self-care. Face masks, in particular, provide that luxurious pampered feeling we all love, even if you’re just hanging out at home. You can purchase face masks in the form of sheet masks, creams or peels. But you can also whip up your own face masks with some basic ingredients you likely have on hand at home, including oatmeal. Pure oatmeal (not the flavored artificial stuff) is one of the most basic yet beneficial, natural ingredients found in many skin care recipes, and it offers a lot as far as your skin goes. Oats contain avenanthramides, which are anti-inflammatory. This makes oatmeal masks an especially ideal choice for those who suffer with irritated skin issues such as rosacea or eczema. It’s also great for acne sufferers because it contains zinc, which is believed to help soak up excess oil from your skin. We’ve rounded up five DIY oatmeal face mask recipes to treat yourself to whenever your skin needs a little boost. These masks all include oatmeal, along with other ingredients that can help boost your complexion.
We know the idea of putting applesauce on your face sounds odd. But this oatmeal, honey and applesauce face mask can work as a great exfoliator for your skin. Pure applesauce contains malic acid, which is known to improve skin firmness and as well as reduce the appearance of wrinkles. Just be sure to purchase pure applesauce without any additives.
2 tablespoons oatmeal
1 tablespoon honey
2 tablespoons apple sauce
Mix ingredients together in a bowl. Apply mask to face and leave on for 10-15 minutes before rinsing off with tepid water.
This is one of our favorite DIY oatmeal face masks to make because it’s multifunctional: The oats exfoliate, the honey moisturizes and the yogurt contains lactic acid, which can brighten skin and help treat hyperpigmentation. Lastly, the strawberries are chock-full of Vitamin C, which boasts a plethora of skin benefits, including protection from free radicals.
¼ cup rolled oats
3 tablespoons yogurts
2 tablespoons honey
Blend the dry oats until they turn into a powder. Move the powder to a bowl. Next, puree the strawberries, then add them to the bowl along with the yogurt and honey. Let the mixture stand for about 10-15 minutes so that the ingredients saturate. Then, apply the mask to your face, avoiding the eye and mouth areas. Allow it to soak into your skin for 10-20 minutes before rinsing it off.

Avocados are packed with beneficial nutrients that can moisturize skin and give your winter complexion a much-needed boost. Plus, it’s got coconut oil, which touts antibacterial and antifungal properties, along with it’s well-known moisturizing abilities. Note: We left lemon juice out of the original recipe because we’re not a fan of putting it on our skin — it can be irritating to sensitive skin. That being said, feel free to add it if you want!
1 tablespoon rolled oats
1 tablespoon honey
1 tablespoon coconut oil
2 drops of your favorite essential oil (we love using lavender)
Start by mashing 1/2 an avocado with a fork in a bowl. Next, add the rolled oats to a food processor and coarse until they’re ground (roughly). Place the oats into a bowl with the mashed avocado and mix together well.
