Chicago Wants to Bike You – PPM Apartments Blog

Did you know?  Bicycling.com named Chicago the #5 most bike-friendly city in the United States.  And rightfully so.  Currently, riding a bike is legal on all Chicago streets, and there are over 300 miles of bike paths and lanes lining streets throughout the city.  And even better, the city of Chicago has begun to implement the Bike 2015 Plan to make city roadways even more accommodating to local cyclists.  The plan will expand this current system to a total of 500 miles by 2015.  Because of that, and because of PPM Chicago Apartments resident input, it is our goal at PPM to have designated bike storage at EVERY ONE of our PPM properties.  And it just makes sense; bike riding is much cheaper, greener, and (often) quicker than driving in a car.
Don’t have a bike, but interested in getting, using, or borrowing one?  No problem.
The city of Chicago has approved a bike sharing program where residents can rent bikes on a per day basis or with an annual pass.  It is similarly the iGo or ZipCar of bicycling.  The program was tested in 2010 with a company called “B-Cycle,” who still has some stations, including one on Division by our Gold Coast buildings.  The new and current contract uses the services of Alta Bicycle Share.  The Alta bike sharing stations are still being installed, but some are available for use, including one in Lincoln Park right outside of the Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum.
If you are looking to purchase a bike, the tourism bike rental company, Bike and Roll, gets a brand new fleet of bicycles each year.  Because of this, they have a giant sale at the end of the summer (around Labor Day weekend) for local residents to buy these high quality cycles at a significantly reduced price.  In other words, you can get a 2012 model that is slightly used at the end of the season for a really good deal.  Make sure to monitor www.bikechicago.com for upcoming end-of-the-season sales.
