Looking for stuff to do in Chicago this September? While many events aren’t possible due to Covid-19, there are plenty of outdoor and virtual events happening around the Windy City for you to safely enjoy. Check out our roundup of Chicago events below, from lake tours to virtual sea otter encounters.
Outdoor Chicago Events
Lake tours are still (safely) happening. If you’ve never toured the city by boat, opt to be a tourist in your own home for a day tour of Chicago’s historic landmarks from the lake. Social distancing and masks are required, so come prepared!
Another event to enjoy this September is The Art Institute of Chicago’s special outdoor exhibit called “The Flowers of Monet in the Artist’s Garden,” featuring — you guessed it — florals found in Claude Monet’s most beloved masterpieces. Walking through the garden, you’ll spot dahlias, asters, and other blooms Monet incorporated into his works. With a miniature lily pad and a “living wall” inspired by his famous Water Lilies painting, this is an event you’re not going to want to miss.
From now through November 1, you can get your dinosaur fix at Brookfield Zoo’s “Dinos Everywhere!” exhibit. Sure, this exhibit may technically be geared toward kids. But, we’re pretty sure people of all ages love dinos (including us). Admire over 40 freakishly lifelike animatronic dinosaurs, and answer dinosaur trivia questions to compete for a prize.
Thanks to the CHI Together Drive-In at Soldier Field, you can safely enjoy music and movies from the comfort of your car. A few September features include “Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl, “Avengers – End Game,” and “Anchorman.” Bonus: You’ll get free popcorn with every ticket.
Virtual Chicago Events
Thanks to the Shedd Aquarium, you can get up close and personal with adorable sea otters—virtually. You’ll get a behind-the-scenes virtual peak at sea otter playtime, which involves all sorts of diving, grooming, and socializing between the group. The encounter includes 35-40 minutes of fun featuring Luna, Ellie, Kiana, Cooper, Watson and/or Yaku.
Adler Planetarium is offering an awesome virtual event where you’ll interact with astronomers and science historians. The series treats viewers to space visualizations, space and science research and news, and diverse speakers working in the STEM field, plus lots more.
