It’s possible to keep a dog in your apartment. At Planned Property Management, many of our buildings allow pets, and one even has its own dog park! But you have to make sure that you get an appropriate dog for your lifestyle. Here are a few suggestions depending on what kind of dog you’re looking for.
In most cases, the perfect dog for your apartment is going to be a small, friendly lap dog that can be content in small spaces and doesn’t need too much time running around outside. There are many good options for dogs that are appropriately sized and low-energy for an apartment, such as:
– English bulldog
– French bulldog
– Shih Tzu
– Tibetan Spaniel
The English bulldog is a little bigger than the others, but all of these low-energy dogs are all friendly and happy to live in an apartment.
There are some other small cuddly dogs that come with caveats, such as the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, which is a great little dog, but needs more than your average attention, so if you’re not home most days, it can get anxious and cause problems. Havanese, Pekingese, and Lhasa Apso are all great little dogs, but they need attentive grooming for their distinctive coats. The Bichon Frise also benefits from grooming and needs a little more exercise than the others.
Some little dogs are great for almost any small apartment, except for one thing: they’re barkers. However, they can make great companions if you’re willing to put in the effort to train them. The Chihuahua, Yorkshire terrier, and dachshund fall into this category.
There are also some big dogs that can be surprisingly good for apartment living. The Great Dane and mastiff are both big dogs, but they’re not especially active. Just one decent walk a day and they’re content. Two and they’re worn out and ready to call it a day. The Greyhound is another dog that likes to lay around all day, though young dogs may like to get out for one good run a day.
